Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur Stream

Newfoundland and Labrador is the easternmost province of Canada and another Atlantic province. St. John is the largest city and center of the province.

The province has a population of about 540,000 (2021). About half of the province’s population lives in the St. John’s metropolitan area (202,000 people).

The average temperature in this province is between -7 to 21 degrees Celsius.

The main economy of this province is based on fishing (cod fish).

Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur Stream

The International Entrepreneur category is intended for experienced business owners or senior business managers who wish to permanently reside in Newfoundland and Labrador.  They must start a new business or buy an existing business and must actively participate in the day-to-day management of the business.  After operating the business for at least one continuous year, the international entrepreneur may be nominated for permanent resident status, subject to fulfillment of certain criteria outlined by the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism.

Eligibility Requirements 

To be eligible for this stream, candidates must meet the following criterion.

  • Age: 

Must be between 21-59 years of age. 

  • Experience & business ownership: 

Candidates must prove that they have:

–  at least two years’ experience actively managing and owning a business (25 per cent minimum ownership) in the last five years OR

– 5 or more years’ experience in a senior business management role in the last ten years;

  • Net worth: 

Have at least $600,000 CAD in unencumbered net business and personal assets that can readily be transferred to Canada;

  • Education: 

Have a minimum of Canadian high school diploma or equivalent foreign credential verified by an Education Credential Assessment (ECA), taken in the last five years prior to the date the EOI is submitted.

  • Business proposal: 

You must submit a business proposal to establish a new business or purchase of an existing business in NL.

  • Ownership percentage: 

At least one-third (33.33%)

  • Investment: 

Invest minimum $200,000 in an eligible new business or to purchase and improve an existing business in NL.

  • Job creation: 

Demonstrate ability to create at least one full-time equivalent job for local population (permanent residents and Canadian citizens)

 
  • Language requirement: 

Minimum of CLB 5 equivalent in English or French.
